Christine M. Dankert (Smith)

25 life altering facts that are pretty mundane.  Here goes.

1.   I don't remember a lot from school, although I loved HS.  If anyone has a good story about me, let me know!

2.   I am trying to get my (auto) biography written by all my friends before I forget completely everything.

3.   Being an exchange student to Sweden changed my life. I made several continuing friendships.  We have traveled back and forth to this day, and now are enjoying friendships with their children.  My friend AnnBritt, who is a special news reporter for SVT, occasionally flies over for stories and we catch up on everything.

4.   I met my husband Karl in Ottawa, Kansas (home of Steve Grogan) where we went to college and we got married in 67 after he graduated.  He spent his life in Education- teaching, administration, then charter schools, and finally as an adjunct prof at several universities.

5.   I taught HS science until our children arrived.  I have three boys, and you know when you say their ages outloud, then you really know you are old.  So I am whispering:  Aaron is almost 41, Adam almost 38, and Nate is 35.  I have 4 grand girls, and one grandson.

6.   Nate, the youngest, has Down syndrome and lives in a group home about 10 minutes from me.  He likes to keep in contact so he calls about 5 times a day.  No wonder I have a phone phobia!  He has a great sense of humor, and would make a great activites director for a cruise ship. He goes to church with me and we both sing in the choir.  He could live on Subway, soda, ketchup, and Frostys.

7.   In 1976 I started taking stenciling classes that morphed into home parties.  I started with Hitchcock stencils so I probably have 10 pounds of gold and silver powders settled in my kidneys.  (your arm was your pallet).

8.   In 1986 I started taking faux finish classes, and since that time have worked with many talented people Keeping up in that field requires continuing ed, so each year has brought new trends, techniques, including classes at Rhode Island School of Design. My portfolio now includes besides stenciling (no-no-no hearts or ducks please) faux bois, trompe l'oeil, murals, cabinet refinishing, venetian and decorative plasters, gilding and more.  You are welcome to check out my FB Business page at  facebook.com/fauxpainter1.  This address is not embedded, I don't know how to do that.

9.   In 1997 I made my first trip with a painting team to work on Naworth Castle in England.  Have been back twice now with plans to go again next year. (The Earl loves us)

10.  I love being on the east coast.  I moved here in 1970.  We finally bought a cottage on West Island, in Fairhaven, MA to remodel as a year-round home.  Several months later my husband passed away unexpectedly.  Now I am trying to be a subcontractor and get the cottage ready for year round living,  Can't wait to sell my house, although I will miss it so much.  One foot in front of the other.  That's how it is done.

11. I don't think I have one piece of clothing without paint, plaster or dye on it.  I have vowed to stay off scaffolding at this point, but I love to create and it's hard to say no to an exciting job.  As soon as I hit "submit" I will probably think of 5 or 6 really interesting things to post.  All for now, I have to go order windows for the cottage.

PS.  I was going to be a U-2 pilot like Mark, but there wasn't enough room in the cockpit for my legs!  Looking forward to the reunion.

My first computer wasn't an Altair, although I knew a guy that had one. Mine was a TRS-80 which used a cassette player for input. My first hard drive was 20 mb and cost $400. At those prices, my present terabyte drive would have cost over $20 million!

Stephen Liskow

I love reading all these responses and catching up with so many people, especially since I'm not going to be at the reunion this year.

I'm starting research for another Woody Guthrie novel that MIGHT be set at least partly in Saginaw. Do any of you who still live in the area (maybe Gary Van Riper, who seems to be the historian of the group) remember exactly when John Moore School on Court street became unoccupied? When I was back for the 2005 reunion, someone told me there was a bad mildew/mold problem. Is that true? On that same general topic, when was that red brick post-Civil War Court House replaced with the terrarium they have now?

Looking at all the comments about health tells me I should have mentioned in my list that I was 8 years cancer-free in March, and also am a tuberculosis survivor. I picked up TB while teaching. Go figure.

Thanks everyone. Stay well and maybe I'll see you next time.

Steve Liskow

Carolyn Coats (Medendorp)

Nobody tagged me but I'll add my 25 things anyhow.

1.   My husband, Tom, and I just celebrated our 49th wedding anniversary.

2.   We have 2 wonderful kids who presented us with 5 terrific grandchildren.  For two weeks in October the grands will all be teenagers.  The oldest three will be in college next fall (two sophomores and a freshman), the next is in high school and the yougest starts middle school in the fall.

3.   Tom and I like to build houses but we're open to remodeling if there's nothing to build.  We moved more times than I cam remember but always in the Greater Grand Rapids area until this newest house which is in Cadillac.

4.   We own a small house in The Great Outdoors in Titusville, Florida.  That's on the lazy Atlantic coast with none of the Gulf coat traffic unless you go far south.  We like Florida from mid-October through mid-May.  Then we head back to Michigan.

5.   We used to be boaters and have wonderful memories of cruising the Inland Waterways of Canadian Lake Huron.  Truly a beautiful place.

6.   In 1993 I crushed three vertebrae while boating so we switched to motorhomes.  It's wonderful to see the national parks and feel free to travel wherever we want.  (This summer the motorhome is our home until the house is done.)

7.   I have osteoporosis, diabetes, high things that should be low, low things that should be high and I took the familiar trek through breast cancer.  Aside from back pain, I feel pretty good anyhow.

8.  I started coloring my hair in my late 20s and always hated it.  It was like I was ashamed of myself.  In my 50s I said, "Enough" and now have a silvery hair color that I love love love.

9.   I've gained so much weight that I don't even recognize myself in photographs.  I personally think it's because I just eat too much but the doctors tell me it's also from the gym bag full of medicine that I take.

10.  Over the last 20 years we had 7 boxers, usually two at a time.  The first one was a pup but after that we adopted older dogs.  I love rescue dogs.  Our boxers usually weighed between 60 and 70 pounds and 120 to 140 pounds of dogs got to be too much for me to walk.

11.  We just adopted a 13-pound 6-year-old Boston terrier.  We've only had him about a week but he seems like a miniature little pistol like the boxers.

12.  I love recorded classes from The Great Courses.  I've been studying the history of early Christianity and the development of the Bible for many years.  It's totally fascinating to me.  I drove from Grand Rapids to Saginaw every week while my mother was declining with Alzheimer's disease.  The courses made the drive a lot more bearable.

13.  I worked as a freelance writer for much of my adulthood.  I wrote for weekly papers and the Grand Rapids Press and Grand Rapids Magazine.  I also taught journalism at Grand Rapids Community College.

13.  I loved volunteerism and seemed to always have some kind of projects in the works.  With our move to Cadillac I don't have any volunteer projects lined up so I'm currently making luminaria bags for the 2016 Relay for Life in Lowell, Michigan.

14.  I met Tom at The University of Michigan and we married after my freshman year.  I took college classes on and off until I finally got my BA (cum laude no less)  from Aquinas College in 1988, the same year our youngest child graduated from high school.  It never did me any good career-wise but it felt wonderful to have achieved that goal.

15.  My father had researched my family genealogy so I researched my husband Tom's.  I worked on it for maybe five years and had a great time doing it.  I made friends with a family in the Netherlands (Tom is 100% Dutch) and they came to see us in the USA for three weeks in 1999 and we went to visit them in the Netherlands for a month in 2001.  It was wonderful to have a native show us around.

16.  I wonder where I was when so many of you were having such wonderful fun while at Arthur Hill.  I thought I had a great time but when I read what lots of you did, I realize I was majorly out of it all.  I'm still that way.

17.  I love, love, love Facebook.  I keep up with my brother and his children and my cousins and their children.  I feel as if I know them even though we rarely see one another.  Getting to know so many Hillites has been fun too.  I really enjoy folks I didn't even know while in high school!

18.  I used to quilt a lot but it started to feel tedious.  I have projects almost done that I sat down 20 years ago and never picked up again.  I love to learn how to do things but once I know how the spark goes out of it.

19.  I won doll dressing contests and even served as a judge.  I made awesome Halloween costumes.  I sewed lots of fun things.  I haven't touched my sewing machine in a long, long time.

20.  As part of a Relay for Life team I spearheaded our team's participation in four huge Christmas craft sales.  I made Christmas floral arrangements and decorated miniature Christmas trees and made ornaments of all kinds .  It was almost a full-time job.

21.  I'm a big fan of Bernie Sanders although I'll support Hillary if she ends up with the nomination.  I figure we'll have a Democratic president in 2016 since the Republican possibilities are all nut cases.  I suggest we don't discuss politics at the reunion.

22.  Fifty years is a long time to remember!  My life has been lived in wonderful waves.  When one passed another presented itself.  I'm positive I'm forgetting lots of interesting things but that was then and this is now.

I CHALLENGE SUE TRIER HANSON, JIM HANSON, JACQUE BERLIN, CONNIE SPARKS CLARK AND VAN ABBOTT AND AT LEAST THREE UNNAMED PERSONS.

Christine M. Dankert (Smith)

Carolyn Coats, I'm with you on #16.  It's fun reading what everyone else was doing, well mostly fun, while I was doing my own thing. It seems like we are all coping with something, and healthwise, that is how it goes.

Marilyn Millet (Smith)

Carolyn, and I like #8.  I've never dyed my hair and figured I'd be the only one there that didn't.  Although I'm not all gray, we'll stand out in the crowd!

Karen Hassberger (Hoerauf)

Carolyn, I definitely agree with you on #16 & 18 & 21! When I first wrote my list, I was just winging it. Now that I have seen so many great lists of others, I want a do-over!

Hi Carolyn,

I'm with you on #21!  But don't be too confident of a victory.  Nuts have won in the past!   People need to VOTE! I look forward to seeing you at the reunion.

Norma Metzger (Schmick)

25 things about Norma Metzger Schmick that you might not know:

 1.  I had my 3rd colonoscopy in early May--no polyps!  But my surgeon told Ray that (even under light sedation) I had chatted through the whole procedure!  Ray responded with, “I am not surprised.”

2.  I remember relatives calling me “Chatterbox”  when I was a little girl.  Nothing has changed!

3.  Anyone fall into a Sinkhole?  I DID last Aug., at our cottage.  Luckily, only my right leg past my knee went down into the sinkhole, and I was able to push myself up out of the deep hole!

4. Our seasonal cottage is on Torch Lake in Michigan.

5.  I still love to sing, whether in church or in my car.  Taylor Swift’s CD is in my vehicle now--”Shake It Off!”

6.  Five out of nine of my cars that I have owned have been RED.  I, finally, got my first SUV last Oct.--RED!

7.  All of my vehicles except the very first one, have had a sunroof or moon roof.

8.  My one pampering treat to myself is having manicures and pedicures at a salon.

9.  I pride myself on being an “independent” voter.  But for several years our family has had lively discussions with my leaning “conservative” viewpoints.

10.  I have been trained as a Stephen Minister.

11.  I have always enjoyed visiting and helping elderly family and friends.

12.  Since Christmas, I have been very involved with one of my elderly friends (85-year-old) from church.  Her only relative lives out of state and is also aged.  With help from our Pastor, we have gotten her legal assistance and professional health care at home for now.

13.  I, also, love to be with children.  It’s always a pleasure to be able to babysit or spend time with our two granddaughters, Ella, almost 10, and Nina, 6.

14,  Call me “Bionic Woman.”  Since 2009, I have had two knee replacements and cataract surgeries with ReStor lens implants.

15.  I am a malignant melanoma survivor since 1995.

16.  After my “lucky to be alive melanoma scare,” I became known as the “Birthday Queen.”  I feel that anyone has the right to celebrate their birthday as long as they wish!

17.  I taught elementary school for 3 years in North Dearborn Heights, MI.  I chose to be a stay-at-home Mom when Amy and Mike were born in 1973 and 1979.

18.  I did complete my Master’s Degree in Education.  Luckily, Amy would sit quietly for about an hour or two while I obtained my research articles to photocopy from our Dearborn Public Library.

19.  As our two children grew up, I volunteered for school, church, and their extracurricular activities.  Usually, I served on the boards as secretary.  Biggest commitment was being President of Mike’s private Preschool.

20.  I got to become good friends with Karen Hassberger Hoerauf at CMU.  (I hold Karen in high esteem for all her behind-the-scenes efforts for our 50th and other Class Reunions.)

21.  I was known as Norma P or Norma Pearl (my real middle name) at CMU.  Friends including Karen would shout across campus--Norma P!  Actually, some of our son’s friends still call me that from their days in high school.

22.  Susie Pussehl Reifert and I have been best friends since 5th grade.

23.  Susie and I were meant to become good friends.  She grew up in the same house that my paternal grandfather built.  My older brother, John, was actually born in that house in 1930.

24.  Even though Ray told about our adopting cocker spaniels through the years, I need to mention our 2-year-old parti-cocker, Biscuit.  I want Biscuit to continue “listening” to my conversations with him!

25.  Just in case there is still someone in our class that does not know this trivia:
Ray and my first date was graduation night.  We were married 3 years later while still in college.  (We had lots to celebrate that graduation night.  Ray was awarded the Arthur Hill Scholarship.)

Watch out--I will tag 5 of you soon!

Norma Metzger (Schmick)

Since Karen Hassberger Hoerauf has tagged me, Norma Metzger Schmick, a few times starting with last Fall, I want to respond to some of Karen’s 25 things.  (Since I tend to procrastinate on some projects, I have been creating my 25 things in my mind for months.  I would giggle about how Karen and I were in some ways completely opposite!)

1.  Karen claims to be NOT patient.  I am super patient, Karen.  I know that I have tried your patience to its limits all year!  Thanks for still talking to me!

2.  We both had our falls--yours off the roof--so sorry!  Mine into the Sinkhole!

3.  Okay, I would love to be your Trivia Pursuit partner!

4.  I can understand why you wanted to leave Frankenmuth.  I love visiting Frankenmuth.  My sister-in-law’s grandmother started Zehnders with her chicken recipe.  My brother (deceased in 2006) and my sister-in-law always lived in Frankenmuth.

5.  I love to dance when I get the chance.

6.  Karen claimed every Seinfeld character irritated her.  I love Seinfeld!!  I almost am embarrassed to admit now that I have a framed signed photograph of the 4 actors hanging in our family room.  I bid top price at a charity auction for that favorite wall hanging. Our children and I could always relate to almost every episode.  One episode was about Neuman and Kramer driving a mail truck to of all places, Saginaw, Michigan’s Mail Distribution Center.  Since the truck was not totally filled with mail, they had bags of cans to be redeemed for 10 cents/each in MI!
A recent birthday gift from my family--we all saw Jerry Seinfeld perform in Toledo.

7.  Karen, you never need an alarm clock!  I sometimes need two alarms for a very early important appointment or babysitting super early in the a.m.

8.  I have to plan meals ahead of time to make sure I have the food in our refrig!

9.  I love the fact that Mark and you are so adventurous in all your travels!

10.  Wow--impressed with your tattoo

Karen, thanks for getting some of us to complete these lists.  It’s been a great way to communicate.  There is plenty of time for other classmates to send in their 25 or less things!
