Karen Hassberger (Hoerauf)

THE GAME HAS BEGUN on our 50th Reunion Website. Check often to see the latest entries. RULES: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note in the Message Forum with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about youself. At the end, choose five others from the reunion website to be tagged. If I tagged you, its because I want to know more about you.  You must respond within three days and tag (at least) three other people. We once knew pretty much everything about each other, now . . . not so much. Anybody been in an earthquake? Nope... Whale watching? You bet! Grow jalapenos? Boston Legal fan? Season tickets to ball games? Have 10 grandchildren? Weigh what you did in high school? Weigh twice what you did in high school? By-pass surgery? Lasik and would you recommend it or not? Everybody had their colonoscopy? Anybody? (I bet more women have than the men) See, we aren't movie stars and didn't grow up to be president, either, and that's okay. We want to know you again and be friends. Hope you join the fun."

Karen Hassberger Hoerauf:

25 Random Things You Don't Know About Me:

1) I love words, word play, puns and clever jokes.

2) I have dyslexia especially with numbers and seplling (spelling).

3) I trained myself to deal with my dyslexia by the 6th grade.

4) My dyslexia is back and I struggle to play games such as "Scramble with Friends". My friends always beat me... by lots.

5) I love to create: writing, art, painting, quick combacks, whatever!

6) I am not patient... I want it NOW!  Don't ask me to practice... when I sit down at the piano, I should be able to play Motzart right from the get-go.

7) When I read the newspaper, I always skip the sports section and the "Letters to the Editor"...they drive me to drink!

8) I fell off a roof in 1980 and had multiple compound fractures of both my wrists. in 2014, I had my right wrist fused, so for the first time in 35 years, I am out of pain!

9) I was interviewed by a reporter from Le Monde (THE French newspaper) on my views of the Trevon Martin affair. I was hoping for a conviction.

10) I retain the most obscure facts, which makes me a great trivia partner.

11). I lived in Frankenmuth for 30+ years. I was so-ooooo glad to move away.

12) I lived in downtown Bay City for five years.  I so-oooooo hated to move away.

13) I check out 8-10 books whenever I go to the library and finish them all in the two week check-out period.

14) I can't dance like nobody's watching but I'm a great chair dancer.

15) I always have to do something else as I watch tv.

16) I love "Walking Dead" and "Orange is the New Black".

17) I hated "Seinfeld".  Every character irritated me!

22) I miss my freckles

23) I have no idea what my natural hair color is.

24) Everything reminds me of a song which I immediately begin to hum.

25) I have two tattoos... one visible, one not visible.

26) OMG, Rob Hogg just reminded me... My dad owned Import Auto Sales when I was 14-15. He sold terrific cars (Jaguars, Triumphs, MGs, Morris Minors, Austin Healeys, etc).  By the time I turned 16 and got my license, he had lost everything due to a crooked manager who embezelled tons of money and started a fire to hide the evidence. Bummer!

25 Things About Me - Marlene Melcher

I LOVE being older... so many things that were important in the past, no longer are...

I've been coloring my hair for 54 years!! And will continue until the day I die!! I AM a blonde!!!

Doug Wilson and I dated thanks to Mary Burnett’s insistence!!  Once he rolled his Austin Healey convertible on the curve on River Road.  No we weren’t going out to park… or at least I wasn’t aware of that if we were!  L O L  We were very fortunate that we weren't crushed to death....

Since my divorce in '98... 3 of the 4 men I have dated have died.   Doug being one of them.  He and I reconnected at the 2000 reunion!

I have a great sense of humor... I never knew that!  I love my deep belly laughs and 'making' others laugh.

I  LOVE games... any kind… bananagrams, Trivia, cards, sudoku, crosswords, bridge.

Facebook is awesome and how it has reconnected us... unfortunately I spend too much time on it!!

I had such a crush on Bob Chandler (aka Miles) for a whole year at AHHS... and finally he asked me out!!  (Do you remember that Miles?  I know I was the worst date you ever had!!)   I look back now and wonder why I was such a pain that night!  I so much wanted you to ask me out and you did...  what was I thinking???  and by that I mean... then why was I such an awful date?

I  have one son... age 35.  I always thought I'd have two kids, a boy and a girl but after having Mark; I had so much fun experiencing each ‘age’ with him as he grew that I never wanted to stop and go back bottles and diapers again!!  No grandkids... Mark is getting married in November... so maybe one day!!

Attending  June Week at the United States Naval Academy per Dan Jones invitation was a wonderful experience.

I never expected I’d end up divorcee!!  I am enjoying my freedom. .. .  but one day would like a special man in my life again…. I miss that loving bond.

My father lived with me the last 3 years of his life and it was an experience I treasure.  He died in my sister’s and my presence at age 94 at home.

I got a belly piercing after my divorce!!  Wish I still had it!  L O L

My whole view on organized religion has shifted.  I accept any religion that is based on  kindness, compassion, and giving.  I have not gone to church since 1965 (except for weddings and funerals) I prefer self-study of spiritual material and discussions with like minded friends.

I never watch TV... I feel it is such a waste of time… so I waste my time on my computer instead!  L O L

Since I can tell time without a watch, I haven’t worn one in years and years!   I can usually come within 10 minutes or so even when waking in the middle of the night.

However, my sense of direction is way off!!  I never know if I’m heading N, S, E or W!!!

I work 4 (very) part time jobs… and love it!!  I love to be around people being involved and feeling productive.

My first car was a yellow Volkswagon convertible… loved that car!!   My ‘last’ car will be a convertible!!

As  kid I always wanted to live in Florida... I never guessed I end up here!!

I have never smoked pot and didn’t have sex until I was 20… boy did I miss out!!!

I’m a Sagittarius and it’s pretty true what they say about “us”,  however the part about being physically active is not.  I hate exercise!

While growing up I never thought I was very smart or pretty... and now I see that it doesn’t matter!

I HATED reading while in school and now LOVE  it!!  My bookcase is stuffed (mainly non-fiction) and at this moment I have 12 books piled on my bed.  I also am a good writer... and never knew that!

And last but not least..… I did not plan to go to our 50th until I connected with so many on the Arthur Hill site (thank you Karen!!)  and Facebook… now I can’t wait to go and personally reconnect!!!  I look forward to seeing you all SOON!!

Robert (Bob) Hogg

25 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ME

  1. I was born on the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Maine.

  2. I attended kindergarten at a Catholic School in Sasebo, Japan. Then after moving to Saginaw, attended kindergarten again at John Moore School.

  3. The house I grew up in at the corner of Cass and Oakley once belonged to the Mooney’s Ice Cream people.

  4. My favorite toys when I was a kid were the little science project kits my dad would bring home. He worked at Michigan Bell, and the kits were made by Bell Labs. They probably account for my life-long interest in Science and math.

  5. My Mom owned a car dealership in Saginaw called European Motors. She was in competition with Karen’s dad,who owned Import Auto Sales on Water St

  6. I originally was a member of the class of ’66, but then I skipped the 9th grade, and presto, I became the youngest member of the class of ‘65.

  7. I moved away from Saginaw within a week of graduation, dragged kicking and screaming up to Marquette in the U.P. (Actually, if you had read my profile on this site, you would have known that about me.)

  8. I attended McGill University in Montreal in 1965-66 and majored in Molson’s.

  9. From 1966 to 1970, I attended and graduated from Northern Michigan University.

  10. Ken Gross was my best man and Don Lynar attended my wedding also.

  11. We have two daughters, Lesley and Erin, but no grandchildren.

  12. We do have an exchange grandson, Sam. His mother, Lena was an exchange student with my brother John’s family in high school, and later, after university in Russia, came back here, went to NMU, got a degree in accounting, and is now a CPA, a citizen and a wife and mom in Omaha.

  13. I’ve worked in real estate for 42 years, exclusively doing appraisals for the last 30.

  14. Whenever somebody at the office or in our Florida condo needs help with their computer, they ask “The Wizard”. It’s not that I know that much about that stuff, I just know how to find out. Also, 90% of the time, you just reboot, and like magic, everything’s fine.

  15. I’ve been sober since 1983.

  16. Nothing interesting since then.

  17. Ha ha, not really. I'm still working because I loved what I do, but I play golf and Sue & I spend a couple of months a year in the Florida Keys. If you lived in the U.P. you’d go south too.

  18. I also have been taking a few courses at NMU the last few years. Usually one a year in the fall semester so it doesn’t interfere with going to Florida. HTML, Network Security, Probability and Statistics. Geeky stuff like that.

  19. So I’ve gone from being the youngest kid in class to the oldest. I think I probably went to school with some of their grandparents.

  20. I also enjoy walking, and at work, I have a treadmill desk.

  21. My summer car is a ’67 yellow VW convertible. Marlene, if you’re ever in the U.P. I’ll give you a ride in it.

  22. I know a guy who, when cleaning his gun, shot his trigger finger off.

  23. I enjoy Facebook. I post a couple of things a week, one is Country Western Line of the Day (example: The Only Ring I Ever Gave Her Was the One I Left Around the Tub.) And the other thing is Street Art Sunday, which you can guess.

  24. I think I’ve been to all the reunions.

  25. I didn’t think I could come up with 25 things.

I’m not going to challenge anybody to do this. I don’t like it when I’m put on the spot, and I’m not going to do it to anyone else. But do it anyway. It’s not that hard and it’s fun.

07/03/15 04:00 PM #13

Raynold A. Schmick

1. I like convertibles. Almost all of the cars that I have owned have been convertibles, from my first (a 1960 Ford) through my current car.

2. I have practiced law in Detroit and Ann Arbor for over 40 years, still practice full-time, still enjoy it, and have no intention of doing anything else. One of the real pleasures in my life is that for the last 10+ years, I have practiced with my son and partner, Mike.

3. When we were very young, and I was trying to figure out what to do with my life, Norma and I watched the movie Anatomy of a Murder, in which Jimmy Stewart plays a northern Michigan lawyer. Norma said, “You could do that”. I had not previously thought about being a lawyer. So, I sort of randomly walked into a career that I love. Thanks, Norma!

4. We are also very proud of our daughter Amy, who is a wonderfully talented and caring family practice doctor—but since I’m tagging Norma next, I can’t hog all of the family stories.

5. I tilt toward the left politically. I think that people should pretty much be left alone by the government, but there should be a meaningful safety net for those who need it. A functioning government costs money, and I make it a point never to complain about paying taxes.

6. I agree with Jane Snyder Deters that June Roethke, our ninth grade English teacher at South School, was absolutely the best. The discipline for the English language that she drummed into us has made a real difference in my life. In her honor, I support the Friends of Theodore Roethke, a non-profit which is restoring the Roethke family home on Gratiot in Saginaw as a center for writing and poetry.

7. South School alumni who still have fondness for June Roethke may want to read The Glass House: The Life of Theodore Roethke by Alan Seager (available on Amazon) which gives some insights into the burdens that she undertook from an early age to support her alcoholic, mentally ill and incredibly talented brother. It’s a good read, with some Saginaw history.

8. I still enjoy The Atlantic magazine every month; see June Roethke above.

9. I love crosswords. I take a weekly stab at one or both of the New York Times Sunday crossword and the Wall Street Journal Friday crossword. 11. I have owned an old Mercury Cougar (convertible, of course) for a long time. I’ve been looking into the history of this model and recently joined the Cougar Club of America. Given the change in the common usage of the word “cougar”, that organization might want to consider changing its name.

12. Norma and I have loved four cocker spaniels over the years. The first three were buff-colored. Our current buddy, two-year old Biscuit, was named by our granddaughters after a buff-colored dog in a series of children’s books. Biscuit’s name was determined before we found him, and everyone expected another buff-colored cocker. In fact, he is parti-colored (chocolate, beige and white). The name may not fit very well, but he is Biscuit!

13. Deep down, I’m a little insulted when I’m given a senior discount without asking. I don’t understand why they think I’m that old…

14. When I started this list of items that my classmates might find vaguely interesting, I resolved that it would not exceed 14 items. That limit was inspired by Nancy Hatfield Scales’ list of 15 items—but one of Nancy’s entries was her tattoo, and I don’t have any tattoos!

I tag Norma Metzger Schmick, Jim Hanson, Tim Kosinski, Lloyd Anderson and Bob Hogg.

Janice A. Carter (Buyssens)

Janice Carter Buyssens

OK Karen, only 25 things?

My Birthday is January 20 so I get a president every four years whether I want that one or not.

I have four sons-Ryan, 1972:  Aaron, 1976:  Evan, 1981:  Spencer, 1982

I have 7 grandchildren-Gracious, 2002:  Amien 2004:  Maximus, 2006:  Phoebe, 2010:  Magnolia, 2010:  Harper, 2011:  Carter, 2012  How about those names

We spend our summers in Tawas Michigan and part of our winters at our home in Pinehurst, NC.

We love the great lakes, but really only in the summer-too depressing to look at in winter.

Have had many dogs and cats over the years, but none now as we like to pick up and go without the problems.

Took a great trip to Alaska.  My son Spencer lives in Valdez and really showed us great out of the way places.  Great place to visit.

I have been spending beach time with grandchildren and have found reading classics that I hated in school are really rewarding reading.

I was in an earthquake in Palm Springs, CA and really never felt it, but watched the plants and blinds sway.

I can never remember the punch line to a joke.

I had lasik surgery about 15 years ago.  I was very nearsighted, but now need reading glasses-age.

I can't watch TV without having something else to do-reading, suduko, needlepoint, anything to keep my hands busy.

I am an early riser-never use a clock, but a really poor sleeper-2 1/2 hours asleep-3 or 4 awake.

I have never colored my hair-this is the way I show my sons what they have done to me and hope their children are kinder.

I saw a cat taken by a hawk just after I had fed it in Palm Springs.

I hate to cook, but my husband loves to-how lucky I am.

Family still owns the same cottage on Lake Huron for 61 years.

I hate traffic, but have no trouble driving 14 hours to our NC home

I have driven mostly mini vans since they came out in 1984 and drive one now.  No one passes me!

I missed the last reunion-didn't know about it- and will miss seeing Sally Shear at this one.  We had known each other since Kindergarten and even were in the same dorm at MSU.

I hate shopping.

I think I have forgotten to count-enough about me:  I challenge Chris Danker, Sue Cooper, Sandy Easlick, Melissa Manning and Holly Peters.  Hope to hear frome each of you.
