Ken and I were friends throughout high school. We both participated in the City tennis program in the summer at Garber Courts. He earned the nickname "Fox" because he was always full of mischief. My fondest memory is riding our bikes to the tennis courts and, after 3 hours in the heat, riding back to the A & W on Gratiot and having the best cold root beer ever. With Ken's passing, I think I'm the only one left of the starting singles players in senior year - yikes!
I don't think I ever met Fox until high school, but we were best friends from then on. Talk about mischief! We would bomb around in my black '56 VW. To the Den, the Drive-in Movies, Richie's, etc.
I just reread a couple of letters he wrote me just after I moved to Marquette with all the latest news from the past week, him babysitting with Marcia Abler, Dave Hamather wiping out on his Harley(!!), "Kayberry" breaking up with Khuen, Lloyd & Guna...I could go on and on, he certainly did. Apparently, Andy Merz was a real hound.
Ken was best man at my wedding, and I was going to be his at his first wedding until his wife-to-be decided I wasn't tall enough to match up with her maid of honor. I had my toast all written. It was hilarious! I think Dave Dodge was the replacement, I made him write his own.
Anyway, R.I.P. Fox. It was good to see you one last time at the reunion, we're all glad you came.
He already had that name when I met met him, but according to Lloyd, it was because of his mischievous nature. I could see a glimmer of that when he told me he wanted the two of us to wear tuxes to the reunion. I said no, but maybe we should have.
Yes, Marlene, Ken earned the nickname "Fox" for all the mischief he created at summer tennis lessons at the Garber Courts. I actually remember the instructor Bill Gustafson chasing him at the courts to retaliate for some prank he pulled. By the way, Bob, whatever happened to Dave Dodge?
thanks for all your comments and picture! I took a few lessons at Garber and was so bad that they put me in the group of 'dummies' and we had to stand at the back and practice on the wall.. end of lessons, i.e. end of my interest in learning tennis! :( too bad.. it's a great sport!

All I know is that has a hyphenated name. I'm going to dig around & see what I can find. I'll let him know about Fox if I find him.
